Frequently Asked Questions:(Many pages re-direct here; please use the "back" button on your browser to return to the page you were browsing.)
What is the difference between an SLR and a Point and Shoot camera?
SLR stands for "Single Lens Reflex." This indicates that when you are looking through the viewfinder or screen, the image is coming through the same lens that will take the pictures. SLRs usually have removable and interchangeable lenses and and are typically more expensive and more complicated. Professional photographers and avid hobbyists typically use SLRs.
Point and Shoots are designed to do exactly as their name implies--to easily take a picture anywhere under any conditions. These are designed for the more casual photographer, and come in a wide variety of sizes. They are typically smaller, lighter, and easier to use than an SLR. But they usually lack the adaptability that comes with changeable lenses and professional features that may be available on some of these smaller cameras is usually not as easy to get to.
What are these different Media cards that are used in digital cameras?
SD/SD HD--this is Probably the most common media, (used largely by Canon and Pentax) but you need to be aware of something: There is a difference between SD and SD HC. SD means "Secure Digital", and all older cameras that use "SD Media" are compatible with that. But as picture quality has increased, they needed more room, so they invented SD HC The HC stands for "High Capacity." Any camera that accepts SD HC media will also be able to use the older SD cards, but the older cameras that use only SD cannot use SD HC.
xD/Micro xD--this media is used primarily by Olympus, (although many Fuji cameras support it too). Micro xD is, as the name implies, is much smaller, and sometimes is used in small handheld devices. Most cameras require a micro xD adaptor if you want to use them.
